BELEF 2010 ‘ON THE NEW WAVE’ (NA NOVOM TALASU)

This year the Belgrade Summer Festival – BELEF, with the slogan ‘On The New Wave’, will attempt to present Belgrade as the cultural centre of the region, a city that offers an exceptional cultural scene and a tolerant, communicative, urban essence.

The beginnings of The New Wave movement in Serbia are traced back to the year of 1980 and the publication of the infamous record ‘Paket Aranžman’ (Package Deal) promoting a new, authentic esthetics and perspective that was introduced into our culture by the bands like Idoli (Idols), Šarlo Akrobata (Charles the Acrobat), and Električni Orgazam (Electric Orgazam). The New Wave espoused new ideas so in that period it seemed as if Belgrade were the centre of Europe or even the world. It delivered a new generation of eminent artists, unique personalities, who alltogether rendered Belgrade the charming and irresitable place it has remained to this day.

With a number of concerts, photography exhibitions, screenings and panels of this year’s Belgrade Summer Festival (July 16 through August 8) that goes by the slogan ’On The New Wave’ we shall mark 30 years of The New Wave movement  as the latest urban impact, a musical and art movement in Serbia and the entire former Yugoslavia. Playing again will be musicians and bands from all over Serbia and the region that had marked this movement. Performing alongside them will be some new and current representatives of altenative music from Serbia and the region whose performances will give an insight to the Belgrade auditorium into the current alternatnative music scene.

In the department of the visual arts and theatre there will also be a presentation of trends in the contemporary art scene of the region and Europe in cooperation with foreign cultural centres, forums and instituts in Serbia.

Within the visual programme presented for the first time will be the ’Open Cinema’ (Otvoreni Bioskop) programme through which several short, alternative and indie film and documentary festivals of the region shall be presented. The ’Open Cinema’ program will be a unique, free of charge ’festival of a festival’ where all interested parties as well as those who accidentaly happen to at the Kalemegdan Fortress will not only have the opportunity to to find out which festivals represent film production of this particular kind, but also to watch award winning films.

Let’s all be on this new wave of creativity this summer.
