Jimi Tenor, a leading contemporary Finnish musician and composer, has never adapted himself to the traditional role of pop artist. He dedicated himself to anticipation of new trends of the avant-garde pop electronic and developing his own auto-ironic pop formula, instead of fame and popularity. His last obsession was Afro-beat, but if we take a look at a fifteen-year long history, we shall notice as equally strong influences the psychedelic soul, jazz of the sixties and seventies and the experimental rock.
The eccentric Finnish electronic and jazz innovator in his last incarnation, recorded on his latest hit album "Joystone" has found the musical enlightenment by working with the co-workers of the legendary Fela Kuti.
Although Tenor spent the majority of his career living and working in the capitals of the alternative Europe (Berlin and Barcelona), London and New York, his artistic approach remained typically Finnish: technically practical, but filled with black humour, self-irony and bizarre romanticism. That is why he feels equally at home anywhere on the planet while frenzied audience in ecstasy follows his unique show, a mixture of spangles, kitsch, classical music skills and many "do-it-yourself" technical improvisations, varying from Chinese cassette player to foot-operated East German dynamo generator; and all of this while performing a bizarre song about Finnish forest gods, sounding like a combination of Gil Evans, Jimmy Hendrix and Fela Kuti with an outfit worthy of a lost child Andy Warhol and Elton John.
Today, Jimi Tenor is a recognized European artist, who works outside the boundaries of the current mainstream perception. His audience consists of demanding members of the group of alternative trends, who look for a new, atypical musical perspective, including jazz and funk renegades – all those who understand that nothing can gladden one’s heart more than a unconventional, humorous pop.
