Jovan Čekić

Born in 1953, in Belgrade. Graduated from the Belgrade Faculty of Philosophy, Department of Philosophy. Has been exhibiting since 1975. Award winner of the Memorial Nadežda Petrović and October Salon. Worked as editor in the magazine Moment. Till 1997 was the director and editor-in-chief of the New Moment magazine for visual culture. In 1998 published the book "Cutting the Chaos" (Geopoetika). Editor of "Art Edition" in the publishing house Geopoetika.

From 1993 to 1997 worked as a creative director of Saatchi & Saatchi, was art director of the Youth Biennale in Vršac in 2002, art director and selector of BELEF in 2003 and 2004, and from 2003 to 2006 a visiting professor at the Fine Arts Academy of Cetinje.

Since 1975 has been present on the neo-vanguard art scene gathered round the Gallery of the Students’ Cultural Centre of Belgrade. Jovan Čekić is one of the founders of the group of conceptual artists 143. He soon left the group and started independent activities in 1980s and 1990s, when he created one of his most important works of art in which was established a suggestive balance between theoretical and practical activities, in the base of which lies Duchan’s concept "idea over product".
