Roxy Music originated from the art rock movement in late sixties while the band members themselves were spellbound by fashion, cinematography, pop art and avant-garde which was their point of difference from other bands at the time. After several years the group developed its own style of sophisticated and enticing soul pop. Disappointed with Bryan Ferry’s reluctance to record his songs, Brian Eno, who was a member of the original line-up, left the band after the release of their second album. In the spring of 1981, Roxy Music’s version of Jealous Guy by John Lennon, recorded as a tribute to this world-famous musician, became their first UK Number One single. A little later, their LP Avalon was released – in the summer of 1982. This was their best album which reigned supreme at the top of the UK album chart for three weeks. Avalon became the group’s only American Gold, and subsequently Platinum album. Avalon was also their last “joint venture”. Ferry turned to his solo career, while Manzanera and Mackay formed a new band in 1985 – The Explorers. A compilation of Ferry’s solo hits dubbed Street Life: 20 Great Hits was launched in 1989, followed by Heart Still Burning live album with the original 1982 concert recording a year later.
