Performance Watching 02
Project Watching is based on series
of black and white photos taken during the process of watching
basketball matches in characteristic situations starting from
the TV live broadcast in public and private environs to watching
the game at the spot, in the sports hall where the match is actually
taking place.
The project has been happening in the period
2002 – 2005 in four phases through which the authors – Vesna Pavlovic
(photos) and Vladimir Tupanjac (narrative) are trying to present
several cultural aspects of a sports event phenomenon, such as
relations between the audience and the event, between the local
and global, the recognition of the identity of the community,
personal and collective identification etc.
In the second phase of the project (Watching
02) the photos of the audience watching the Partizan Basketball
Club game are taken in the Pionir sports hall in Belgrade. The
intention of the authors is to show through the series of photos
and the narrative the differences in the ways of consuming the
sports events and to draw attention to the context or importance
of such an event of the specific intensity in a contemporary society.
Scenes of observers of the game are taken in
the sports arena, their attention this time not limited by the
media intermediaries; they form a constitutive part of the spectacle,
they are included in its structure, not just in a sense of social
relations, but as a forming element of the audio and visual content
of the event itself.
