About the BELEF 03 Theatrical Selection

My feeling of the theatrical programme of Belgrade Summer Festival 03 is a mixture of diversities, but also of structures that should reflect the atmosphere of Belgrade summer, acquiring the logic of the manifestation, happening mostly outdoors and aiming to make the city dance with joy, to wake it up and entertain, to sparkle interest of random passers-by with some attraction, but also to satisfy the more experienced theatre goers.

On one hand there are young and junior authors of the festival production (Kokan Mladenovic, Stevan Bodroza, Vojin Paunovic), who I believe are ready to take risks and boldly spread wings of their imagination and respond to challenges of working in the settings of the Kalemegdan fortress / park, the Ada Ciganlija isle, Belgrade streets and squares; I expect them to pursue exploring their power and energy to the very boundaries, to put on trial their imagination and of their potential audience who, in the environment of the Belgrade summer reality, needs to be won yet.

On the other hand, there is the knowledge and crafts of the experienced and already proven foreign artists (Carolyn Carlson, Rezo Gabriadze, Damir Zlatar Frej) but also domestic theatre authors (Alisa Stojanovic) invited to present plays that will be remembered, the plays that will mesmerise the audience by their artistic and professional perfection.

For me, a specific character of this year selector's engagement also presented a challenge. Thanks to the understanding of the City Assembly and the support of the BELEF Council it was not limited to the mere selection of the already produced plays, but allowed the Festival to get into its own production. However, unlike productions of many other summer festivals that usually die with the approach of autumn, BELEF and Belgrade will support their summer productions and facilitate their natural step forward into becoming part of the regular repertoire of capital’s theatres. That is how co-productions with the Atelje 212, “Dusko Radovic” theatre and the Belgrade Drama Theatre were created and produced.

The intention of BELEF to leave visible traces behind does not end here. That is why the international star Carolyn Carlson is having a master class and Rahim Burhan works with our actors trying to bring closer his theatrical poetics to them, workshops (open "classes") as basic principles of theatrical proceeds in the production of Bojana Mladenovic and Dusan Muric (with foreign dancers) and Dalija Acin; hence the arrival of the Czech Experimental Theatre with its extraordinary performances that should stir up the atmosphere in the Belgrade streets, the performances of Mimart and Ister Theatre. That is why this summer the isle of Ada Ciganlija will become a Robinson's Isle where the famous shipwreck survivor is going to reveal the secrets of living in the nature to the children and hopefully lure them into the magic world of theatre. Hence the virtuous, modest and authentic theatrical expression of the Clear Brooks Family, who often discover the already discovered, but in a sincere, truly spontaneous and authentic way, emanating extraordinary energy and especially these days, much needed enthusiasm.

It is important for Belgrade to see the latest international trends, but also to become a part of the world theatrical events; to be able to compare itself with the others. The best way to do so is by learning and cooperating with the international artists and by recruiting the young viewers as the future regular audience.

The work of selectors is like working in a theatrical production when the final outcome is uncertain, regardless the positive qualities of the script, famous names of the directors and members of the production team and the ideal cast. Automatic success is not guaranteed despite his best intentions, but the absolute determination of the organisers, founders and sponsors rendering maximum support to his concept and the selection.
