By mid 90s, a co-founder of the legendary San
Francisco group Tuxedomoon Steven Brown founded 9 Rain. At the
time, this progressive group could be classified somewhere in-between
world, electronic and jazz music based on its sense of identity.
Steven brown moved to Mexico wishing to plunge into its culture
and everyday life. His reputation of an avant-garde pop-music
pioneer has been boosted by his playing with the 9 Rain. Together
with German electronic musician Nikolas Klau and Mexican multi-instrumentalist
Alejandro Herrera, he endeavours to trace the links between Latin
American groove and European jazz, between underground rock and
imaginary film music.
The songs from the Rain of Fire joyfully roam
through styles and periods, being propelled by emotions, experiment
and the sense of nuances. Some songs might well be the soundtrack
music for Mexican westerns, while some reflect the frenzy of Mexico
City in the music. In a song titled Venus Rising, Brown invites
his listeners to a town in which the world is going to collapse,
in which the banks rob you of your cash and the thieves of all
the rest. Come to Mexico and see the world upside down. Most of
the texts and sounds have been impregnated with almost British-like
irony used by the group for sharpening their own drama.
