Tomaš Žiška, a set designer, is a lecturer at the Department of Alternative Theatre of the Academy of Drama Arts (DAMU) in Prague. He is an associate and assistant of Jozef Svodoba in the Laterna Magica Theather as well as a disciple of Eugenio Barba and an adherent of New Dutch Theatre. Ziska made a reputation internationally for site-specific* projects carried out across Europe within which he gathered young artists with different experience and of diverse artistic expressions, focused on the researches of a theatre phenomenon out of those conventional theatre halls. He is one of the most prominent members of the Education Commision (EDUCOM), the International Association of Set Designers, Theatre Architects and Technicians (OISTAT). Ziska lectures part-time architecture of alternative set locations at the Department of Multidisciplinary Set Design Postgraduate Studies at the University of Arts in Belgrade. Within a creative workshop in the first year of these studies organized by YUSTAT in May 2002, Ziska launched three site-specific projects that will be carried out within IV Set Design Biennial in Belgrade in September 2002 as well as within the Quadrennial in Prague in June 2003. The presentation of these three projects at BELEF '02, i.e. their study versions, aims to get acquainted the experts and the public in Belgrade with the purpose and character of the research done by the students of Set Design Postgraduate Studies under the tutorship of Tomas Ziska. It is also intended to include our eminent artists working within this art field that is traditionally present and important for and in Belgrade, in order to expand the framework of this research and induce a constructive discussion about the projects being in the progress. * The expression "site-specific" designates
every scene or, in the broadest sense, public event created or performed
intetionally for an in-advance-chosen architectural or urban location;
therefore, this expression can nominate every "ambient" event
or "ambient" theatre or "ambient" art intervention,
in this kind of artistic practice. |
